Our Teachers and Staff
Kim serves as the school’s Academic Director, and she also teaches our afternoon half-day preschool class. She is a graduate of Illinois State University and has her degree in Early Childhood Education. Kim started at Mulberry in 2002 and taught for nine years, then she took a year off to be with her son. She also taught at Westview Elementary for two years but is now happy to be back home at Mulberry.
Kim enjoys spending time with her son who attends Mulberry School and her family, scrapbooking, and crafting.

Ms. Sue, Preschool Teacher
Sue loves seeing children become totally engaged and excited about school. She is excited to be a preschool teacher at Mulberry where students (and families) have space to learn according to their individual styles. Sue was the kindergarten teacher at Mulberry for 25 years! She now teaches preschool and the “Two for Two’s” class. Sue believes the importance of providing the atmosphere where children love to learn! Sue has a bachelors degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from ISU. Before Mulberry, Sue was head teacher at ISU Childcare Center. Sue has been active with ISWP (Illinois State Writers Project), recipient of “Teacher of the Year” with Girl Scouts, Heartland Community College and her own children’s education careers. Sue loves to promote Mulberry School in the Bloomington-Normal community.
In Sue’s free time she works at Casey’s Garden Shop, loves to garden, participates in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Chicago, and enjoys reading for leisure. Family and friends are important to Sue. She travels 55 North to see her extended family and 55 South to visit her kids in Missouri. Sue is a busy lady!
Kathy is new to Mulberry this year. She teaches the Tuesday-Thursday AM preschool class. She is very excited to join the Mulberry family. Kathy has a degree in Early Childhood Education from Elms College in MA. In her spare time, Kathy loves to spend time with her family (husband Paul and daughters Makayla and Teresa), take walks and read. She grew up in NH so she is a big New England fan. She is looking forward to working with the children, staff, and families at Mulberry.
Ms. Brandi, Preschool Teacher
Brandi has been a part of Mulberry School since 2016. She believes in the importance of fostering a love for school in a nurturing environment for early learners. She earned her degree in Early Childhood Education from Eastern Illinois University. She taught Pre-Kindergarten for four years and Kindergarten for two years. For the past two years, she has provided support to children with special needs in Unit 5.
In her free time, Brandi loves spending time with her family: son Max, daughter Quincy, and youngest son Satchel. Her husband travels for work so they spend most of their free time together as a family. She also enjoys reading and shopping.
Ms. Colette, 4K Teacher
Colette has been with Mulberry School since 2000. She teaches 4K preschool and enjoys getting her students ready for Kindergarten. In 2002, Colette was a Girl Scout Teacher of the Year Nominee. Colette is a graduate of Illinois State University where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education. After school and during the summer Colette works at Dr. Burgess’ Dental Office. She is a big sports fan, loving the Green Bay Packers and St. Louis Cardinals.
In her spare time, Colette enjoys spending time with her family and friends, riding her bike, working around the house, Zumba, and traveling.
Ms. Jess, Kindergarten Teacher
Jess has been a part of the Mulberry team since 2012, and feels it is of the upmost importance that children feel they are in a nurturing environment that allows them to feel comfortable and excited about learning. Jess is an ISU graduate with a Bachelors degree in Early Childhood Education and Special Education.
In her spare time, she likes to play roller derby, spend time with her friends, family and dogs, and scrapbook.
Ms. Zarina, First/Second Grade Teacher
Zarina joined the Mulberry School family in 2016. She holds a degree in Elementary Education from Illinois State, with endorsements in two sciences, language arts, and social studies. Before earning her education degree, Zarina received an M.A. in Literature and Creative Writing, also from ISU, and spent several years teaching at Illinois Wesleyan. Since becoming a licensed teacher, she has worked in local school districts as a special education paraprofessional, a substitute teacher, and a long-term leave replacement teacher. She is also an award-winning writer, with two honors from the Illinois Arts Council, and is a children’s media reviewer for Parents’ Choice Foundation.
Outside of school, Zarina enjoys spending time with her family and volunteering for her children’s music and dance activities. She loves reading, writing, traveling, and cooking, but nurturing children brings her the greatest joy.
Ms. Kayla, Art teacher
Kayla is an artist and educator that holds a professional k-12 teaching license in both Colorado and Illinois. Hueneburg attended Illinois State University for her undergraduate studies as well as her graduate studies. She received of Bachelor of Science degree with honors in 2010 followed by a Master of Science in Art Education in 2016. Hueneburg has exhibited her artwork in group shows across the United States. Recently, she was awarded a Friends of the Arts Grant to fund a collaborative series with her husband, artist Ali Akyüz. In 2016, her work has been exhibited at the University galleries (Normal, IL), the McLean County Art Center (Bloomington, IL), the Milner Library (Normal, IL), and the Studios on Sheridan Art Gallery (Peoria, IL).
Ms. Carolina, Spanish Teacher
Ms. Carolina is our Spanish teacher. She is from Costa Rica and has lived in Illinois for six years. She studied Fine Arts at the University of Costa Rica and taught at a number of schools there. She has shown her artwork in the United States and Costa Rica. She loves teaching children and believes it is very important to study a second language, especially in a fun way. She uses music and creative activities in her language classes. She also teaches at Illinois Wesleyan University’s Language School for Kids.
Ms. Meghan, Music Teacher
Ms. Meghan is Mulberry School’s Music Teacher. She is a student at Illinois Wesleyan University, majoring in Elementary Education and minoring in Music. This is her first year teaching music at Mulberry and she feels very blessed to be at Mulberry School teaching music!
Meghan states: “Music has always been a part of my life, whether it’s playing piano or performing in shows. Watching kids laugh and dance to the different songs or seeing kids suddenly understanding a certain concept is why I want to be a teacher. I want kids to have fun while learning and exploring new ideas and subjects. I am so thankful for this wonderful opportunity!” And we are so thankful to have her!
Ms. Shawna, Administrative Assistant
& Book Keeper
Shawna will be working part time at Mulberry as our new administrative assistant. She is married to her husband David and they have two beautiful daughters, Tycee (11yrs) and Sabree (9yrs). On the sidelines, her husband and her are owners and operators of a local construction business. Her favorite color is red and they are die hard Dallas Cowboy and Illini fans! Her hobbies are spending time with family and friends, photography, swimming, traveling, and playing with their dog, Harmonee.
We also have a number of student teaching assistants from Illinois Wesleyan University, as well as parent volunteers, teaching classes such as drama, yoga, cooking, meditation, and physical education. These special opportunities vary per year, but our ongoing partnership with ISU and IWU places university students as teacher assistants in the classrooms.
